Board Update

Good Afternoon:

Have a great Labor Day Weekend everyone!

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

Attended the High School’s Open House on August 30th. It was great welcoming back all our students, parents, teachers, and support staff at all our high school. This school year I will be serving as the School Board Building Liaison for the High School, which means I am the main point of contact for issues related to the high school with the board.

District slated to receive $248,724 from Federal Ed Jobs Fund
On, August 31st Governor Ted Strickland and Ohio Superintendent of Public Instruction Deborah S. Delisle released information about the initial allocations under the Education Jobs Fund (Ed Jobs) program recently passed by Congress. It is estimated that Ohio will receive about $361 million. The North Royalton School District is slated to receive $248,724 from the Ed Jobs Fund!!! The Education Jobs Fund requires that school districts use the funds to pay the salaries and benefits of teachers, school administrators and other essential staff. The funds can be used to recall or rehire former employees, retain existing employees and hire new employees to ensure that students receive essential education related services. The funds may not be used for general administrative expenses, overhead or other services. This announcement is good news for our district in these tough economic times.

Attended the City Earth Energy Environment Committee meeting on September 1st. The city’s recycling program is doing well. The committee received a report on the breakdown between post-consumer waste and yard waste. For the year 2009 the city recycled 3,879.68 tons. In addition the new convenience recycling containers are getting good use since being put up a few months ago. The city is going to combine its’ recycling calendar and town planner to save money and will have city, school district, and other important information in it. The committee also discussed some ways that the city can make the future YMCA, a green building. The next EEE committee meeting will be held on October 4th at 7pm at City Hall.

The School Board met for a Special School Board Meeting on September 2nd.The Board approved the negotiated agreements and compensation plans with the North Royalton Education Association, Ohio Association of Public School Employees/AFSCME Chapter 4 Local 231, Central Office Professional Staff Association, North Royalton Principals’ Association, and North Royalton Central Office Administrators for the period August 1, 2010 through July 31, 2013. The Board also approved reinstating employees that were suspended pursuant to the reduction in force. Our district has brought back the last person who was on the reduction in force list from a few years ago. Board approved the appointments of certificated/licensed and classified employees for the 2010-2011 school year. In addition the Board approved/amended supplemental contract appointments for the 2010-2011 school year. The Board also agreed to switching to a consent agenda to help make regular board meetings more efficient. The Board also discussed such other matters that came before the Board.

Attended the Middle School’s Open House on September 2nd for grades 7-8. It was great welcoming back all our students, parents, teachers, and support staff at the middle school.

On September 4th I meet with a School Board Member from the North Olmsted School Board about exploring an idea of creating a, 24th Senate District Education Caucus or having regional round table discussions regarding education. Such a caucus or roundtable discussions would help local school districts like ours in being stronger advocates for education related issues and lobbying the Ohio General Assembly.

NR Schools Facilities Committee Update
The district Facilities Committee is looking for more members of the community to join the committee. The committee is working on reviewing and developing the district’s facilities master plan.
