LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

Facilities Committee Update
The Facilities Committee met back in October to get feedback from committee members on what they have been hearing from the community concerning our school district and its’ facilities. Over the past few months the district has been focusing on our stadium project. The North Royalton Stadium Foundation is close to reaching its’ goal of raising the necessary funds for the new synthetic turf and track project. In addition the district and School Board is committed to getting the other necessary parts of the project done to make this a reality. The district will need to go out to bid on the project, but the hope is that we will be able to do all or most of the proposed stadium project. Besides the stadium project, the committee will start developing an informational campaign with a video showing the limitations of our facilities in the district so the community has a better understanding of the district’s needs. The committee needs much more community involvement for its’ future meetings. So if you have concerns about our current facilities, have professional expertise, or just want to have your voice heard then consider attending a future facilities committee meeting. I will keep you posted when then next committee meeting will be for 2011. One of the goals of the district’s strategic plan is to come up with a Facilities Master Plan and is something the committee will be continuing to work on next year.

Board Update

Good Evening:

It is hard to believe we are only weeks away from the end of the year 2010 and that I have been serving on the North Royalton School Board for almost entire year now. It seems like so much longer than that. I must say this has been a great year and it is an honor to serve as a member of the School Board. I truly enjoy all your feedback and confidence in me as a leader. As you may know each January at the School Board’s Organizational Meeting the Board elects its’ President and Vice President for the year. After lots of positive feedback from constituents and much thought I would like to announce that I am running for Vice President of the North Royalton School Board. The year 2011 will be very challenging with the upcoming state budget and many other issues the district will face in the coming year. I believe it is important to step up as a leader and serve in the role of Vice President for the Board. On January 10th the Board will vote on its’ leadership positions. I will keep you posted if I do get elected by the Board to the Vice Presidency; I just thought it was important to share this news with you.

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

The School Board met on December 13th for its’ December Regular School Board Meeting. The Board approved the appointment of School Board Member Cheryl Hannan as the representative to the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center Board of Education for a two-year term. The approved a resolution to set January 10, 2011 at 7pm, North Royalton High School Community Room, as the time and place for the Organizational Meeting of the Board of Education; the 2011 Tax Budget Hearing will be part of the January Regular Meeting which will immediately follow the Organizational Meeting. The board also approved 2010-2011 appropriation adjustments. The Board approved the appointment of Leonard Reinhard as the President Pro Tempore for the 2011 Board of Education Organizational Meeting. In addition the Board approved adding Financial Literacy and College Career Readiness courses into the district’s curriculum. The Board approved December 2010 Policy Updates. Also Board approved a resolution authorizing the President of the Board of Education and Treasurer of this Board to on this Board’s behalf in connection with the improvements to the North Royalton Stadium Complex an agreement with MKC Associates, Inc. For Professional design services in an amount not to exceed two hundred forty two thousand dollars ($242,000). I would like to note that the work MKC is doing is being funded by the district’s (PI) Permanent Improvement dollars. The Board approved also various other agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.

Attended the North Royalton Middle School’s Holiday Breakfast Celebration on December 16th. I enjoyed spending time with our great administrators, teachers, and staff at the middle school.

On December 18th I volunteered at the North Royalton Food Bank to help with distributing the Christmas gifts and food to the over 140 families in our community in need. Special thanks to all those in the community; who have been so generous in supporting our local food bank. Because of you families in our community will be able to enjoy Christmas, even in the most difficult of times.

High School Gift Tree
Students at North Royalton High School collected over $3,000 and we were able to get gifts for 10 families from their Christmas wish lists. In addition they were able to help 5 families by giving them $100 gift cards to Giant Eagle, and they were also gave $700 to the North Royalton Office of Aging who uses the money to buy presents for needy families in North Royalton. Thank you to the 65 students and staff who helped decorated presents and all those who participated in this very worthy cause!!!

Snow Days Update
As you know the district has already used up 2 out 3 snow days for this school year. The district is looking at what options we have since we only have 1 snow day left. There have been some talks about doing a 2 hour delay if weather conditions warrant it. I will keep you posted on what the district’s plans are for moving forward. Below is an article about some of the debate going on in the state regarding snow days that is important to share.

Kasich Settles Snow Day Debate

Gov.-elect John Kasich says after consulting his daughter, he has decided Ohio should return to the five calamity days allotted schools before the Legislature reduced them to three under the current budget.

The incoming governor requested more time to study the issue Wednesday morning during questions with reporters but later made up his mind, he says, after his daughter weighed in on the snow day debate spurred by Sen. Tim Grendell (R-Chesterland). (See The Hannah Report, 12/14/10.)

Kasich says his administration will go back to five calamity days, but as with the final year of Taft tax cuts scheduled in Calendar Year 2011, the governor-elect need do nothing for the state to revert to five snow days in the school year beginning 2011. (See The Hannah Report, 12/10/10.) However, additional snow days in the current academic year would require a legislative fix by the incoming Republican majority in both houses.

Grendell, who launched a mini-storm over calamity days Tuesday, responded to the announcement.

“As a continual supporter for educating the future generations of Ohioans, we need to help out schools districts that have the heavy, snowy weather conditions and not have them worry about the safety of their students and faculty,” the senator said. “I look forward to sitting down and working with Gov.-elect Kasich and the leadership teams of both the House and Senate to make this happen.”

Gov. Ted Strickland, who requested the snow day reduction in HB1 as part of his phase-in of a longer school year, also responded to Kasich’s announcement.

“I think if the state pays for a day of instruction for a student, the student should get a day of instruction.”

Good Evening:

Winter is here to stay! There is a bad winter storm on the way for Monday, please make sure if you drive your child school or if they get picked up at a bus stop to allow a little extra time. Also please check your answering machine for any Alert Now Messages regarding any possible school closings or delays.
Again, as you know Christmas is coming soon and the best gift you could give the North Royalton School District is helping us win a $250,000.00 Pepsi Refresh Grant for our stadium project! Below is more information on how you can make this wish come true!

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

Attended the Policy Committee Meeting on December 8th by teleconference, unfortunately I was stuck in downtown Cleveland when a massive blizzard hit. Luckily I always have my notes with me. The committee reviewed the December 2010 policy updates. Most of the updates just required minor revisions and changes in language because of new legal requirements. There are only two new policies that were required by changes in the law or legislation such as: a new policy dealing with Call to Active Duty and Educational Opportunity for Military Children.

The School Board met on December 8th for its’ Board Work Session. The Board got an update on the status of the fundraising efforts for the stadium project, donations are on the rise. The Board also discussed what kind of design work MKC Associates Inc. will be doing for the Stadium Project. The Board had discussion on whether or not the Board Work Sessions and Special Meetings should also be audio recorded. The Board also discussed when the Board’s Organizational Meeting will be held for next year. The Board went into executive session to discuss personnel matters. The Board reviewed the December Regular Meeting agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.

PJ Service Project
Brownie Girls Scout Troop 1084 and Royal View Elementary School, from the school guidance office, are partnering with a national program, the Pajama Project, to provide NEW pajamas to children-in-need, many of whom are waiting and hoping to be adopted, or are homeless and living in shelters. Some of these youngsters have been abused or abandoned and in many cases, have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a loving mother or father tuck them in at bedtime. Through this service project, the hope is to contribute to a warmer, more loving environment for children when they are at their most vulnerable. Some of the local receiving organizations who will receive the pajamas include: the Cleveland Christian Home; local domestic violence; homeless; and children’s shelters; and the local Red Cross. Donation guidelines: Pajamas must be NEW! All sizes are needed – don’t forget the older children! Please provide complete sets of pajamas. Financial donations or Gift Cards are always welcome; please ensure these get to Counseling Office. All donated items may be placed under the Holiday Tree in the lobby at Royal View Elementary School from November 29-December 16. Please do NOT gift wrap the items. For more information, please contact Troop Leader Victoria Kress at victoriaekress@gmail.com.

Copy of Board Member Langshaw's Statement at the Dec. 8th Work Session

Dear President Reinhard and Board,

As we approach our organizational meeting in January 2011, I propose that North Royalton Board of Education does an audit to determine the effectiveness of our current standing and ad hoc committees of the Board. The purpose of the audit would be to determine if it is even necessary to have a board member assigned to certain committees, versus would it be better suited to have an administrator just report back to the board on certain committees that we have.

I have contacted OSBA and according to them, school boards must have by law a Family & Civic Engagement Committee (RC 3313.821) and a Business Advisory Committee (RC 3313.82). Also according to OSBA it is typical for boards in our state to have standing committees for Curriculum, Policy, and Finance. I believe that our board has too many committees with a total of 17. I think about half of our current committees truly need a board member assigned to it.

In addition as a result of our strategic plan which calls for us as a district to increase our engagement with the community. Our current committee system does not do that because of the times the majority of our committees are schedule between the hours of 8am-3pm. The common complaint I get from residents is that the hours of committees discourage community involvement. In addition as a board member, because

I work full time in downtown Cleveland like many of our residents, I too am unable to even attend a majority of the meetings even I am assigned too. I believe the committees that need board members to be assigned to them should meet between the hours of 5pm-7pm. It is my understanding this is also a common practice in other districts.

If all possible can we please re-evaluate our current committee structure before our new Board President, whoever he/she may be makes appointments for the year 2011?

Thanks,

Dan Langshaw
