LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

On July 19th attended the Broadview Heights City Council Meeting to personally thank the Broadview Heights City Council and Mayor Alai for their continued support of the North Royalton School District. I also had the opportunity to tell the Broadview Heights City Council about some of the great things that are going on in our district as well ways the district’s new 5-year strategic plan is working to close the Broadview Heights/North Royalton gap in the district. Our district is very lucky to have such a great relationship with the elected officials of both cities in our district!

Important Immunization Changes for The 2010-2011 School Year
Ohio law requires that children who attend a public or non-public school be immunized against certain vaccine-preventable illnesses to help prevent the spread of communicable diseases amongst the children and the public. Beginning this upcoming 2010-2011 school year, the Ohio Department of Health at the recommendation of the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has issued TWO additional immunization requirements: ALL INCOMING KINDERGARTEN STUDENTS ARE NOW REQUIRED TO HAVE TWO DOSES OF THE CHICKENPOX VACCINE. ALL INCOMING 7TH GRADE STUDENTS ARE NOW REQUIRED TO HAVE A TDaP (Tetanus/Diphtheria/Pertussis) BOOSTER. These immunizations must be received prior to the start of 2010-2011 school year. Please contact your physician to schedule an appointment or vaccines are available through the Cuyahoga County Board of Health (CCBH). To schedule an appointment through the CCBH, please call (216) 201-2001. Once your child has received the vaccine, please forward a copy of your child’s immunization record to the school. According to the Ohio Department of Health (2010), “As with other school immunization requirements, students who do not provide documentation of this immunization are subject to exclusion from school”. If you should have any questions, please call Michele Prezenkowski RN, District Health Coordinator, at 440-582-9067.

S. 3206 Keep Our Educators Working Act of 2010

From time to time I write our representatives in the Ohio General Assembly and our members in Congress about various legislation. In my letters I tell lawmakers about the importance certain legislation would have on the North Royalton School District and our community at large. Below is a copy of a recent letter I got from our Congresswoman regarding the Keep Our Educators Working Act of 2010. I think this is a good piece of legislation that would not only help districts like North Royalton, but the rest in our state by having increased federal aid for education.

Board Update

Good Afternoon:

If you know any friends or neighbors who like to receive my weekly e-mail updates please let me know and I will be sure to add them to my e-mail list.

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

The School Board met on July 12th for its’ July Regular School Board Meeting. The board approved various service agreements, student/parent handbooks, school fees, and work calendars for 2010-2011 school year. Also the board approved appointments for supplemental contracts for certificated/licensed employees and classified employees for next school year both by a 4-0 votes. I abstained from voting from both resolutions. Our supplementals which take up 1.7% of the district’s over $40 million dollar budget is an area that needs to be improved upon and could provide some long term savings to the district. However, I didn’t feel comfortable voting on both resolutions until contract negations are completed with our teachers and would like to have better idea of what the next two year state budget will be like. I hope improvements to our supplementals continue and thus far are heading in the right direction. The board also approved the employment of three new teachers for the middle school: Leigh Goughnour, 5th Grade Language Arts; Stacy Tresize, 7th Grade; and Amy White, RtI. All of them are great additions to our district and we are truly lucky to have so many great teachers and staff for students! The Board approved various meeting other agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.

On July 14th attended the North Royalton/Broadview Heights Rotary Club Meeting, and was their guest speaker. I again just wanted to thank the Rotary for the opportunity to tell them about the great things going on in the North Royalton School District and for their support of our school district.

Stadium Project Update
The east/visitor’s stands and all site work are progressing and should be ready in time for the season. Plans are beginning to be put in place to begin Phase Two next summer with the west/home stands, restrooms, concession stands. The North Royalton Stadium Foundation continues to work behind the scenes in efforts to raise funds to replace the track and install synthetic turf which will enable our community stadium to move from 10 events a year to over 200! Thus far they have risen over $30,000. You will hear in the coming weeks the many possibilities to become involved in this exciting project!! Fundraisers are in place including a July 31st Family Bowling event with info attached. If you are interested in more information feel free to contact the chairman, Larry Vasil at 440-570-2446 or check out www.nrstadiumfoundation.com.

Facilities Committee Update
The Facilities Committee met back on June 21st, attached is a copy of the four master plans with the “pro’s and con’s” to each plan of them as well as how they ranked each of the plans at their meeting. The facilities committee will be meeting again sometime in August, when I get the exact date I will let you all know. In addition the district really needs more members of the community to join this committee and give their direct feedback on the various proposed master plans. If you are interested in joining the committee please contact John Ranucci at JRanucci@acitec.com or Assistant Superintendent Jim Presot at
jim.presot@northroyaltonsd.org. Please take the time to look at it the comments and the various master plans and let me know what you think as well? I specifically like to know what you like, don’t like, and any comments you may have? This is something the Board is tentatively scheduled to vote on at our December 2010 regular board meeting after it is given a recommendation from the Facilities Committee. As your member on the board, I need to know what you want so I can vote accordingly.

Board Update

Good Afternoon:

Happy 4th of July everyone! On this day please remember our men and women currently serving in the U.S. Military who are so proudly and bravely fighting out on the front lines, so that we don’t have to. They will miss all the great family cookouts, parades, and even fireworks. Today let's demonstrate our gratitude to all of them, by displaying our flags in honor of their selfless service and sacrifice. Display your flags for all our veterans who served and especially for those that never got to return to their families. Thank you to all of our soldiers, veterans, and their families. We enjoy freedom every day because of them! Happy Birthday America!!!

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

Members of the North Royalton Alumni Association gathered on June 28th afternoon to break ground on the Bell Tower Courtyard Project, which after nearly five years of fundraising, they have enough donations to start construction on a replica tower to house a bell that once was a part of the Royalton Road school before 1972. The bell was rung when the football team won a Friday night game and served as a gathering place before classes began. When the building was demolished sometime in the 1970s, the bell was thought to be lost. However, years later, someone found the bell among debris in an administration building warehouse. Since then the alumni association has been selling bricks which will be placed around the tower to help fund the project. Nearly 350 bricks have been sold thus far. The plan is to have an outside tower that is about 15 feet tall with a small courtyard which stand near the media center entrance of the high school. The project is slated to be completed before the start of new school year. If you like to purchase a brick please contact Dick Fowler, a 1951 NRHS graduate and project chairman, at (440) 230-1275. Order forms are also available at the board office, 6579 Royalton Road.
On June 30th the School Board met for a Special School Board Meeting. The Board approved Appropriation Adjustments, Transfer/Advances, Final 2009-2010 Fund Appropriations, 2010-2011 Temporary Appropriations, and discussed other matters that came before the Board.

Strategic Plan Update
A strategic plan goal that has been accomplished is increasing the availability of news/communication to our Broadview Heights school community. This has been a topic for years due to the coverage of school news via the Royalton Recorder. In addition, a constant area of interest is to remain a very fiscally responsible school district. Those two needs/interests were met in a very exciting endeavor as the Royalton Recorder has recently agreed to send all issues to those homes in Broadview Heights that are part of the North Royalton City School District!!!! In addition, Your Royalton Schools will be printed as part of the Royalton Recorder in three editions (Fall, Winter and Spring). By inserting the Your Royalton Schools in the Royalton Recorder we will achieve a very significant cost savings for our school district. The Royalton Recorder will be mailed to all homes in the ENTIRE North Royalton City School District beginning August 5th. All Broadview Heights residents that have previously held subscriptions will now receive the Royalton Recorder in a more timely manner.
