It was an honor to be one of the evaluators and I truly enjoyed hearing all the great student presentations!

On March 23rd attended the Ohio School Boards Association’s Northeast Region Spring Conference at the Wayne County Schools Career Center. It was a great evening which included student entertainment, presentation of Ohio Teacher of the Year nominees, presentation of Awards of Achievement, and Veteran Board member recognition for years of service. The School Board met on March 14th for its’ March Regular School Board Meeting. Some highlights from the meeting. The board had several guest. The board approved renew contracts for several administrative staff. Board approved an agreement with the Educational Service Center of Cuyahoga County. The board accepted the retirement of six long serving personnel including: Rose Adriano, Denise Daugherty, Darlene DeBrock, Nancy Mattes, Richard Nesbett, and High School Principal Carol Moehring. Also the Board approved a resolution authorizing an amendment to a cell tower lease with STC Two LLC through Global Signal Acquisitions at the high school stadium and rescinding, upon the occurrence of certain conditions, the lease termination letter previously sent by the district counsel. The money from this cell tower will be continued to be allocated for recreation/athletics funds. The Board approved authorizing an increase in plate lunch prices effective 2011-2012 school year. The Board approved also various other agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.
On March 15th Governor John Kasich released his Executive Budget for fiscal year 2012 and fiscal year 2013. Click here Full Budget link http://ohio.gov/docs/Blue%20Book%20-%20Final.pdf for a link to the "Blue Book," which is a summary description of his budget proposal. The actual bill language has not been released yet and a bill is expected to be introduced until later this month. Our Superintendent, Treasurer, and the rest of the School Board will be analyzing the proposal over the next few weeks and will provide details as we learn more. (Attached is a copy of the state department of education proposed budget).

On March 16th attended the NRHS Winter Sports Recognition Night to honor Basketball, Cheerleading, Gymnastics, Hockey, Swimming & Diving, Wrestling student athletes. Congrats to all our student athletes on their accomplishments on and off the field! Also that night Superintendent Vittardi honored Larry Vasil and Jim Smith as our Friends of Education for the 2010-2011 school year. Larry has been our North Royalton Education Foundation president for the last five years and also started our Stadium Foundation serving as the president. Under his leadership the North Royalton Education Foundation has given over $40,000 in mini grants and scholarships to benefit the students of our district. Of great significance is the fact that during this time he has had no children in the school district. Jim Smith has been a steadfast volunteer for the North Royalton Athletic Boosters serving presently as vice-president. He was a tireless levy volunteer and was also involved in the district strategic plan process. Most recently Jim has led the North Royalton Stadium Foundation fundraising efforts which has resulted in over $915,000 of privately raised funds for the stadium project. Congrats to both of them!

Staff Recognition
Superintendent Vittardi announced this year's recipients of the Teacher of the Year and Support Staff Person of the Year. Our teacher of the year is Carmen Rademaker from NRMS. Carmen has distinguished herself as an exemplary teacher since joining the North Royalton staff in 1980. She has taught at Valley Vista, Albion and Royal View before joining the NRMS Staff 14 years ago. Carmen is immensely respected by students, staff, parents and colleagues. During her time in North Royalton she has been involved in the various curricular initiatives and is constantly looking for new ways to help students and new things to learn herself. Our Support Staff Person of the Year is Bryan Sheffield, Assistant Head Custodian at NRHS. Bryan joined the NR staff in 2005. Bryan has made an incredible difference in the lives of all he touches. His commitment, care and collaborative style is a tremendous asset to the high school and the entire district. Bryan was an integral part of our strategic planning process by not only his participation on the management team but also offering his insights and leadership during the two –day retreat planning sessions. Congrats to the both of them and we are so lucky to haves such great staff! The formal presentation of these awards will be made at the annual North Royalton Education Foundation Reception, which will be held at Carrie Cerino's on April 27, 2011.

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

On March 7th attended Dine for Domestic Violence Event, hosted by the North Royalton High School Student Government. The event included a spaghetti dinner and speaker Johanna Orozco sharing her powerful story. It was truly moving hearing her story and it was great for all the students and parents present to learn about the warning signs of unhealthy teen dating relationships. The money raised from the event goes towards the Cleveland Domestic Violence Center. If you like to learn more about the Cleveland Domestic Violence Center you can check out there website at
www.domesticviolencecenter.org or if you are in a situation where you or your student needs help you can call their 24-Hour Help Line at 216-391-HELP. I am also attaching an informational sheet on tips for healthy relationships and ways to recognize warning signs of abuse.

Also on March 7th attended the City of North Royalton Ward 3 and Ward 4 Meeting at City Hall. It was great to meet residents who live in Wards 3 and 4. I especially enjoyed welcoming new residents to the North Royalton Community!

State of the State Address
On March 8th Gov. John Kasich delivered his first State of the State address, declaring, "We will not be raising taxes in this state. We're one of the highest tax states in America, and we're not competitive," the governor said. "But I must also tell my colleagues here today that while I believe we can't tax our way to prosperity, we can't cut our way there either.” On K-12 education, Kasich stated that education is “critical to our economic future. But I want to tell you, more choice, more accountability, more dollars in the classroom instead of bureaucracy will improve our schools, and we are going to have a significant reform agenda.” Attached is a copy of the governor’s full address. Next week on March 15th the governor will release his much-anticipated fiscal years 2012-2013 biennial budget proposal. Once it is release I plan to work with the rest of my colleagues on the Board and our Superintendent in understanding how it will impact our school district and what ways we can work with our representatives in Columbus in ensuring that our school district’s voice is heard during the budget process!

Attended the SCENE (School Community Exchange Night for Education) on March 8th at Albion Elementary School. SCENE is an informal opportunity for questions and answers about our North Royalton City School District. This months SCENE was hosted by Principal Melissa Vojta and Superintendent Ed Vittardi. Besides being SCENE Night it was Albion’s Family Math Night. It was so great to see our students and parents doing various math games and activities.

The School Board met on March 10th for its’ Board Work Session. Board got an update on the status of the internal organizational audit of the district’s central office, which will help make the district more effective operationally. The Board was given another update on the status of the district’s food services department and plans for next school year. The North Royalton Stadium Foundation has raised over $915,000 for the project to raise the necessary funds needed for the turf and track. The district’s new website is almost ready and the Board will have an opportunity to review it and give input before it goes live. Board was given an update on the timeline to fill the high school principal position for next school year. The Board had general discussion regarding a review of bullying reporting and will be exploring with other districts do. Board discussed the upcoming state budget and ways we could help educate the community on what potential impact it will have on our school district. I introduced the idea to the board of having the district participate in the “Ski” Box program where secure wooden boxes are placed in schools throughout Northeast Ohio, where students can confidentially write down their concerns for a fellow student or their own. School counselors and administrators are the only ones who have access to the box and they can look into these concerns for crisis intervention purposes. Our Superintendent is going to get more information about the program and see if this something we could explore doing at our various buildings. Board went into executive session to discuss the employment of personnel. The Board reviewed the March Regular Meeting agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board. Before concluding for the night the Board also had a Board Self Evaluation Workshop that was conducted by Edward Flanagan and Thomas Giffels. The brief workshop was very helpful for board development and coming up with ways to improve Board efficiency in the future.

On March 12th attended the 5th Annual North Royalton High School Band Boosters Reverse Raffle at St. Michael's Woodside Party Center. It was a fun evening of great food, music, and prizes. The proceeds of the event go towards helping NRHS Band students.
