Efficiency is very important including helping with traffic congestion and remaining fiscally responsible to taxpayers. As the district begins to look at transportation routes for the 2012-2013 school year, they are asking for parents' help in improving their efficiency and creating a positive and safe experience for each child. The survey can be completed by going to:http://bit.ly/NR_bus_survey. Parents are asked to complete the survey by May 1, 2012. If families have more than one student, they are asked to fill out a separate survey for each student. By completing this survey, the transportation department wants to stress that parents are in no way giving up their student's opportunity to ride the bus. SINCE MY LAST SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

At the March 27th SCENE Meeting the Shape Our Schools Committee gave a presentation on North Royalton City School District Facilities. Shape our Schools Committee has been meeting for more than a year examining all of the school facilities and will be presenting a report of their finds and their vision for the future to the community. To see there full presentation click on this link below:
http://www.northroyaltonsd.org/public/files/SCENE032712.pdf

Please feel free to e-mail or call me to let me know what you think about the recommendations made by the committee.

On March 28th attended the Ohio School Boards Association’s State Legislative Conference in Columbus. I had an opportunity to meet with the Legislative Aides for State Senator Tom Patton, State Representative Marlene Anielski, and State Representative Mike Dovilla to discuss the impact of the Mid-Biennial Budget Review on Public Education and other pending legislation.

Superintendent Ed Vittardi Announced last week the following additional administrative changes in Press Release below:

The North Royalton City Schools has continued transitioning its administrative positions for the next school year and is pleased to announce that Julie Bogden, current principal of the Early Childhood Center, will become the new principal of Albion Elementary. The district also announced today that Mike McGinnis, a current assistant principal at North Royalton High School, has accepted the position of principal of the Early Education Center. Our district’s eyes are always set on making the best possible decisions for the community and its students. We are committed to providing all of our schools, its students, staff, and parents with the highest quality administrator that truly understands our community of learners, and the vision and mission of the North Royalton City Schools.

“I am very excited about this new opportunity,” said McGinnis. “It is great to be able to return to my origins of elementary level education. Prior to moving to the high school, I started my career in a private elementary school for students with learning disabilities. I then began my 18-year tenure with the North Royalton City Schools at Royal View Elementary. I have always viewed Early Childhood education as vital to our student’s growth and development. My firsthand knowledge of the needs of early intervention for those students enrolled in our pre-school program in particular will set the tone for all of their education to come. I look forward to working with the fantastic students, staff, and parents at the ECC.”

“I am honored to be the next principal of Albion Elementary and be a part of the collaborative philosophy and focus on children shared by the staff,” said Bogden. “With my knowledge in elementary education ranging from my experience teaching first and second grade in Green Bay City Schools, to teaching first grade in Avon Lake, along with being a curriculum specialist, I am truly passionate about working closely with teachers and students directly to allow them to reach their maximum potential. I have had the privilege of working with the ECC staff for the past six years. They are a collaborative group of teachers who challenge themselves instructionally to insure that children are receiving an excellent foundation of learning. This continuity among the North Royalton School community is what makes our district a rewarding place to be and one in which truly provides for our children and their future.”

The 2012-2013 North Royalton City Schools’ Principal Team will be:
North Royalton High School Principal – Mr. Mic Becerra
North Royalton Middle School Principal – Mrs. Melissa Vojta
Royal View Elementary – Mr. Kirk Pavelich
Albion Elementary – Mrs. Julie Bogden
Valley Vista Elementary – Mr. Jeff Hill
Early Childhood Center – Mr. Mike McGinnis

These changes, coupled with last week’s principal announcements, represent no additional administrative costs to the district. We have an outstanding administrative team, and when we have openings, we look to those talents first. We are very pleased with all of these transitions and know that the students, staff, parents, and community will be pleased with the new leadership in these buildings.

Cleveland Browns Charity Game

ECC Lil’ Bears PTA Playground Project
The ECC Lil’ Bears PTA is planning on purchasing a play structure that will allow 25-30 kids access to play at a given time. The structure will include at least 1 slide, currently missing from the current playground equipment. Another component would be a molded climbing wall that leads to a platform. The overall unit will also include 2-3 interactive panels like a driver’s panel with steering wheel, mazes or perhaps talking tubes. So far the PTA has already raised about $5K which is a great start to their goal of $8K. But they still need to raise more to reach their final goal. If you would like to make a donation to the ECC playground, checks can be written to: LIL’ BEARS PTA and send it into school 9543 Broadview Road, Broadview Heights, Ohio 44147 in an envelope marked PLAYGROUND DONATION.

SINCE MY LAST SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

The School Board met on March 12th for its’ March Regular School Board Meeting. Some highlights from the meeting. School Board Member Mrs. Dolezal and I were presented with the Ohio School Boards Association’s 2012 Award of Achievement. The High School Gymnastics and Wrestling Teams were recognized for their accomplishments as state qualifiers. Middle School students were recognized for their achievements at the Equations Competition. School Board President Dr. John Kelly announced that the Board will be audio recording all future board meetings to also include Special Board Meetings/Board Work Sessions as a pilot program that the board will evaluate whether or not it should continue the practice after period time. Board approved various 2011-2012 appropriations adjustments to the General Fund. The Board approved renewal of various administrative contracts. The Board approved accepting the retirement of Dr. Andrea Lasko the Principal of Royal View Elementary School. Board approved various personal service contracts. The Board approved the award of roof replacement bid High School (Media Center/Industrial Arts) and Albion Elementary and Alternate 1A. The Board approved also various other agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board. The Board also went into a brief executive session to discuss personnel.

On March 14th Superintendent Ed Vittardi announced some Administration Retirements/Changes in the school district. Here is a copy of his announcement:

The North Royalton City Schools announced the retirement of Dr. Andrea Lasko, principal of Royal View Elementary, at the March Board of Education meetingMonday night. We would like to take the opportunity to again thank Dr. Lasko for her years of outstanding service to education and particularly her years of superior service to the staff, students and parents of Royal View Elementary. She will truly be missed. Dr. Lasko was principal at Royal View Elementary for 15 years. The district also announced today that Mr. Kirk Pavelich, principal of North Royalton Middle School, has been named the new principal at Royal View Elementary for the 2012-13 school year. An outstanding principal at North Royalton Middle School, Kirk has in the same token realized his true passion lies in having numerous and meaningful relationships with students and staff in a building that is small enough to allow this relationship building to be optimized. We are very excited that he will be our new principal at Royal View. These events lead to the available position of principal at North Royalton Middle School. Mrs. Melissa Vojta, as principal at Albion Elementary School, has long been recognized for her outstanding performance as a middle school teacher, middle school administrative intern in North Royalton, and elementary principal in Avon Lake as well as North Royalton. Melissa has a great passion for Albion Elementary and the success of its students and staff. She also has deep roots at the middle level and specifically with NRMS. These circumstances provided her the avenue to apply her years of successful school administration to the middle level, where she began her career. Therefore, it gives us great pleasure to name Mrs. Melissa Vojta as the North Royalton Middle School principal for next school year. Announcing these moves at this point allow the principals to begin planning their transition to their new and exciting opportunities with their students and staff.
Finally, this creates the available position of principal at Albion Elementary. We are committed to providing Albion Elementary School, its students, staff, and parents with the highest quality administrator that truly understands our community of learners, and the vision and mission of the North Royalton City Schools. We will begin that process in the very near future with a posting to interested candidates. One thing I am assured of is that with these changes, we will continue to move forward as a district with outstanding building leadership for the greatest staff and students anywhere.

Board Update

Good Evening:

We are all very saddened by the tragedy that happened at Chardon High School this past week. I just like to extend my thoughts and prayers to the entire Chardon Community as they heal. Some of you might be interested in doing something for the victims of this terrible tragedy. The United Way of Geauga County is overseeing the Chardon Healing Fund that will raise money for the victims' families. The fund has already raised $150,000. In addition the Chardon Angels of Hope has set up a fund at Huntington Bank for donations for the families. If you are interested in making a donation they can be made through any Huntington Bank branch.

Also here is a link to Superintendent Ed Vittardi’s remarks about this tragedy and the
safety procedures that are in place here in the North Royalton City School District:

SINCE MY LAST SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

High School Threat
On February 29th NRHS had a threat that was unsubstantiated. Just in case you did not know about it, I wanted share with you Superintendent Ed Vittardi’s statement regarding the incident:
Good morning. This morning, North Royalton High School received a tip from a student of a potential threat. The North Royalton Police were called and the building was immediately locked down. The threat of a gun, weapon or other harm to students was quickly found to be unsubstantiated. Again- the threat was unsubstantiated.
We are vigilant in our efforts to keep all students and staff safe and commend the student and parents that were involved in this tip. We also continue to work in conjunction with the North Royalton Police Department to keep everyone safe.
I just like to thank our Superintendent, Administrative Team, High School Staff, and North Royalton Police Department on how excellent they handled things. Safety and Security is our number one priority here in the North Royalton City School District. If you ever hear something or see something that doesn’t look right please report it to the proper authorities to investigate.

Partnership for a Healthy North Royalton
Earlier this year, a collaborative coalition of parents, school personnel, business professionals, religious leaders, and other community activists known as the Partnership for a Healthy North Royalton, applied for and were awarded a Federal Drug-Free Community Grant. The grant will be active for two years under the guidance and mentorship of the CAPA (Community Awareness and Prevention Association), and local, well-established coalition in the Brecksville-Broadview Heights communities.
A key component of this grant is to conduct a Community Perception Survey to determine where needs are in relation to the amount of substance use and/or abuse among various age groups in the community. The greater our response to the survey, the better our results will be for analyzing how we can better service those within our community affected by substance abuse issues. Please consider taking a few minutes to participate in the survey. Answers are completely anonymous and are not in any way connected to an identifiable email address. After completing the survey, you can choose to enter a drawing to win an iPad2! Again, responses are still not linked to your name. SINCE MY LAST SCHOOL BOARD UPDATE

Attended the Ohio (ACTE) Association for Career and Technical Education’s Legislative Conference in Columbus on January 25th. As one of the North Royalton City School District’s Representative on the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center Board of Education, I attend the conference along with administrators from the CVCC. The conference was very informative about the issues that face Career and Technical schools like the CVCC. Governor John Kasich addressed the group and talked about his vision for job creation and the future of education in the state. I also had an opportunity to meet with the Aide for State Representative Anielski, Aide for State Representative Dovilla, and personally met with State Senator Patton about issues related to the CVCC. Besides discussing issues related to the CVCC, I shared with our lawmakers the concerns of the North Royalton City School District regarding pending legislation on HB 136, HB 191, and HB 326.

School Board Member Dan Langshaw Testifies on HB 191
While down in Columbus, the evening of January 25th I took advantage of the unique opportunity to testify against HB 191 before the Ohio House of Representatives Education Committee on behalf of the North Royalton City School District. House Bill 191, sponsored by Rep. Bill Hayes (R-Granville) and Rep. Bill Patmon (D-Cleveland), would adjust the minimum school year for school districts from one based on days to one based on hours. The legislation also would prohibit school districts from opening prior to Labor Day or after Memorial Day, except in specified circumstances. A substitute bill was proposed and accepted during the Committee meeting I was at. The substitute version changes the minimum school year for school districts, STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) schools and chartered nonpublic schools from 182 days to: 455 hours for half-day kindergarten; 910 hours for full-day kindergarten and grades one through six; and 1,001 hours for grades seven through 12. The substitute bill also would eliminate the prohibition against staying open after Memorial Day, but retains the bill’s prohibition against opening prior to Labor Day, while adding a waiver process by which a school district may open earlier. According to the legislation, school districts can start before Labor Day if the district or school holds a public hearing on opening prior to Labor Day, approves a resolution allowing schools to open prior to Labor Day, files a copy of the resolution with the superintendent of public instruction no later than July 1 and receives a waiver to open prior to Labor Day from the superintendent. It specifies that the superintendent cannot deny a waiver to a school that has complied with the procedure, and must make the verification within 10 business days of receiving the resolution. The effective date of the bill’s provisions was changed from 2012 to July 1, 2013.

Good Evening, Chairman Stebelton, Vice Chair Newbold, Ranking Member Luckie, and members of the House Education Committee. Thank you for the opportunity to testify on the proposed Substitute HB 191 on the Minimum School Year. My name is Dan Langshaw, and I am member of the North Royalton School Board.

The North Royalton City School District is located in southwest Cuyahoga County and encompasses both the city of North Royalton and parts of the neighboring city of Broadview Heights. Our public school district provides education K-12 to over 4,700 students in our community.

I would like to express concerns with the proposed Substitute HB 191. Specifically, we are opposed to the provision of the bill that requires a thirty-day legal notice and hearing in order to begin classes before Labor Day. Such a mandate would cause an unnecessary burden to local school districts throughout Ohio, including the North Royalton City School District.

Boards of education adopt school calendars in public session. Such public sessions include the opportunity for interested parties to offer public comments prior to any action by the Board of Education. To add the unnecessary burden of a thirty day notice seems to be an unneeded bureaucratic step to a process which has served our school district well in the past.

Please consider removing this provision of the bill and allow for us to retain our local control in deciding what is in the best interest of our community and students when creating our school calendar.

In closing, our community is happy with the current calendar we have and the collaborative process our district uses to create it. We do support the conversion of school days to hours in that this enhances local control and the ability of elected board of education members to respond to the needs of their students, parents, and residents. Please let the people decide what is best and not Columbus. Until this provision is removed, we remain oppose HB 191 in its current form.

Thank you for the opportunity to speak to you this evening. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.

On January 26th, I held my Monthly Constituent Coffee at the Coffee Club. Thank you to those who stopped by. I hold these monthly coffees in order to stay in touch with fellow residents and listen to their feedback. There is no appointment necessary. Simply stop by and talk to me. I will keep you posted when my next monthly coffee in February will be.

Former Reynoldsburg superintendent named governor’s new education czar
Kasich administration recently announced the replacement for outgoing Governor’s Office of 21st Century Education Director Dr. Robert Sommers. The new director is former Reynoldsburg City Schools Superintendent Dick Ross, who will take over on Feb. 1.

Crystal Starfish Award Winners Announced
This past week Superintendent Ed Vittardi presented Crystal Starfish Awards to Bob Rodriquez, Valley Vista custodian and Jocelyn Stella, intervention specialist at Albion.

Bob Rodriguez received a $100 gift certificate to Westfield/Southpark Mall, a $75 gift certificate to Samurai Sushi Bar and Hibachi Steakhouse restaurant in Strongsville, and flowers, balloons, and a $50 gift certificate from Creations by Lynn and Royal Towne Florist. His colleagues in the North Royalton City Schools’ maintenance department nominated Rodriguez. He has been with the district since 2001. An excerpt from his nomination states, “Valley Vista Elementary is always clean and maintained not to mention inviting. Bob takes the initiative to care for his building and will not call our department until last resort and with that is always willing to give a helping hand. We have heard nothing but complimentary remarks from his colleagues at Valley Vista and we believe his presence has positively impacted all who enter the building.”

Jocelyn Stella received $250 from First Federal of Lakewood, to be used towards professional development as well as a $75 gift certificate to Samurai Sushi Bar and Hibachi Steakhouse restaurant in Strongsville, as well as flowers, balloons, and a $50 gift certificate from Creations by Lynn and Royal Towne Florist. A school family and her peers nominated her. She has been with the district since 2008. An excerpt from her nomination states, “The first time we met Jocelyn, we were very relieved and encouraged by her professional and kind demeanor. She had a plan, she was familiar with our child, and she had some expectations. We are amazed to see her plans come to fruition. Our child has a consistent and kind environment to learn. Jocelyn is always available—in person, by telephone, and with daily written reports. Her dedication to her students and their families is tireless and selfless and we’d like to thank her in some special way.”
Congrats to both of them and special thanks for all that they do each and every day in our school district for our students. Also thank you to business partners for their financial support for this positive program in school district!!!
