Board Update

Good Evening:

It is hard to believe we are only weeks away from the end of the year 2010 and that I have been serving on the North Royalton School Board for almost entire year now. It seems like so much longer than that. I must say this has been a great year and it is an honor to serve as a member of the School Board. I truly enjoy all your feedback and confidence in me as a leader. As you may know each January at the School Board’s Organizational Meeting the Board elects its’ President and Vice President for the year. After lots of positive feedback from constituents and much thought I would like to announce that I am running for Vice President of the North Royalton School Board. The year 2011 will be very challenging with the upcoming state budget and many other issues the district will face in the coming year. I believe it is important to step up as a leader and serve in the role of Vice President for the Board. On January 10th the Board will vote on its’ leadership positions. I will keep you posted if I do get elected by the Board to the Vice Presidency; I just thought it was important to share this news with you.

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

The School Board met on December 13th for its’ December Regular School Board Meeting. The Board approved the appointment of School Board Member Cheryl Hannan as the representative to the Cuyahoga Valley Career Center Board of Education for a two-year term. The approved a resolution to set January 10, 2011 at 7pm, North Royalton High School Community Room, as the time and place for the Organizational Meeting of the Board of Education; the 2011 Tax Budget Hearing will be part of the January Regular Meeting which will immediately follow the Organizational Meeting. The board also approved 2010-2011 appropriation adjustments. The Board approved the appointment of Leonard Reinhard as the President Pro Tempore for the 2011 Board of Education Organizational Meeting. For Professional design services in an amount not to exceed two hundred forty two thousand dollars ($242,000). I would like to note that the work MKC is doing is being funded by the district’s (PI) Permanent Improvement dollars. The Board approved also various other agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.

Attended the North Royalton Middle School’s Holiday Breakfast Celebration on December 16th. I enjoyed spending time with our great administrators, teachers, and staff at the middle school.

On December 18th I volunteered at the North Royalton Food Bank to help with distributing the Christmas gifts and food to the over 140 families in our community in need. Special thanks to all those in the community; who have been so generous in supporting our local food bank. Because of you families in our community will be able to enjoy Christmas, even in the most difficult of times.

High School Gift Tree
Students at North Royalton High School collected over $3,000 and we were able to get gifts for 10 families from their Christmas wish lists. In addition they were able to help 5 families by giving them $100 gift cards to Giant Eagle, and they were also gave $700 to the North Royalton Office of Aging who uses the money to buy presents for needy families in North Royalton. Thank you to the 65 students and staff who helped decorated presents and all those who participated in this very worthy cause!!!

Snow Days Update
As you know the district has already used up 2 out 3 snow days for this school year. The district is looking at what options we have since we only have 1 snow day left. There have been some talks about doing a 2 hour delay if weather conditions warrant it. I will keep you posted on what the district’s plans are for moving forward. Below is an article about some of the debate going on in the state regarding snow days that is important to share.

Kasich Settles Snow Day Debate

Gov.-elect John Kasich says after consulting his daughter, he has decided Ohio should return to the five calamity days allotted schools before the Legislature reduced them to three under the current budget.

The incoming governor requested more time to study the issue Wednesday morning during questions with reporters but later made up his mind, he says, after his daughter weighed in on the snow day debate spurred by Sen. Tim Grendell (R-Chesterland). (See The Hannah Report, 12/14/10.)

Kasich says his administration will go back to five calamity days, but as with the final year of Taft tax cuts scheduled in Calendar Year 2011, the governor-elect need do nothing for the state to revert to five snow days in the school year beginning 2011. (See The Hannah Report, 12/10/10.) However, additional snow days in the current academic year would require a legislative fix by the incoming Republican majority in both houses.

Grendell, who launched a mini-storm over calamity days Tuesday, responded to the announcement.

“As a continual supporter for educating the future generations of Ohioans, we need to help out schools districts that have the heavy, snowy weather conditions and not have them worry about the safety of their students and faculty,” the senator said. “I look forward to sitting down and working with Gov.-elect Kasich and the leadership teams of both the House and Senate to make this happen.”

Gov. Ted Strickland, who requested the snow day reduction in HB1 as part of his phase-in of a longer school year, also responded to Kasich’s announcement.

“I think if the state pays for a day of instruction for a student, the student should get a day of instruction.”
