Board Update

Good Evening:

This week on Wednesday, November 24th I will be having my next monthly constituent coffee at the French Quarter Café located at 5540 Wallings Road in North Royalton from 6pm to 8pm. I hold these coffees in order to stay in touch with fellow residents and listen to their feedback one on one. There is no appointment necessary. Simply stop by and talk to me. Hope to see you there!

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

The School Board met on November 17th for its’ November Regular School Board Meeting. The board had a few special guests at its’ meeting such as acknowledging Director of Curriculum & Instruction Bruce Bradley on being named the Outstanding Adjutant Professor for his previous work at Ashland University. A few high school students were recognized for being National Merit Finalist. Also one of the high school science teachers was recognized for being awarded a $500 dollar grant to use solar panels for a class greenhouse project. Each member of the Board gave a report on what new things they learned at the Ohio School Boards Association Capital Conference that was held in Columbus earlier this month. The Board approved the district’s Five-Year Forecast and Five-Year Forecast Assumptions. In addition the Board approved various appropriation adjustments. Also the Board approved participation with the educational service center of Cuyahoga County for the 2010-2011 school year. The Board also approved the resignations, retirements, leaves of absence, and various staff appointments. The Board went into executive session to discuss the employment of personnel and completed the evaluation of the district’s treasurer. The Board approved also various other agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.

Attended the SCENE (School Community Exchange Night for Education) on November 18th at the Middle School. SCENE is an informal opportunity for questions and answers about our North Royalton City School District. This months SCENE we were treated to a brief performance by the NRMS Jazz Band and 8th Grade Choir. Superintendent Ed Vittardi gave an update about the district’s business partnership program and business advisory council. Middle School Principal Kirk Pavelich gave an update about all the fun things going on at the middle school.

Attended the High School Fall Sports Recognition Night on November 18th. All the student athletes who participated in Football, Cheerleading, Volleyball, and Athletic Training were recognized for all their achievements both on and off the field. Congrats to all our student athletes on their great achievements!!!

The North Royalton Stadium Foundation and the North Royalton City School District announced on November 19th that Serpentini Chevrolet has purchased the naming rights to the stadium for $100,000. The field will still be named Gibson Field, after former North Royalton City School’s principal Chuck Gibson. The NRSF has now raised over $500,000 in contributions and pledges toward its’ goal. As a former high school athlete, NRHS Alumnus, and now as a Member of the North Royalton School Board, I just want to thank all those who have made donations to this project so far and look forward to ensuring we get this done for our entire community to enjoy! On November 20th I volunteered at the North Royalton Food Bank and assisted with this years distribution of Thanksgiving Care Boxes of food for the families needing assistance this Thanksgiving! Thank you to all those in the community who have made very generous donations to the Food Bank! For anyone that would like to donate food to the North Royalton Food Bank, you can take it directly to the Food Bank at 14900 State Road on the following Thursdays between the hours of 10am-Noon: December 2, December 9 and December 16. Volunteers will be there to assist you.

On November 20th the North Royalton Football players sponsor the Stuff The Bus Event for the Coats for Kids drive at the Board of Education Office. The North Royalton High School football team stuffed an entire bus with new and gently-worn coats for kids this winter. The players were also featured on Channel 3 news. Here is a clip:

Attended the North Royalton Athletic Boosters 12th Annual Night at the Races at the Strongsville Recreation Center on evening of November 20th. It was a great fun filled night that brought in several thousand dollars for the boosters to continue the great work that they do for our student athletes. Special thanks to the NRAB for putting on such a great event!!!!

Talk begins on next state budget continues!
This week was more discussion around the state about the upcoming state budget. Here is a recent update from the Ohio School Boards Association:

State Budget Update from OSBA

This past weekend, Ohio House Speaker-designee Bill Batchelder (R-Medina) and probable Senate President Tom Niehaus (R-New Richmond) appeared on "Capitol Square" on the Ohio News Network. During an interview on the next state budget, Batchelder and Niehaus indicated the probability of a 15-20% cut in state spending for a variety of state expenditures, including primary and secondary education. It is unclear at this point how the federal stimulus money figures into any such calculation, and both legislative leaders indicated that they are not in favor of any across-the-board cuts, but instead favor an analysis by department and agency.

OSBA, BASA and OASBO are committed to keeping their members as informed as possible during these difficult times. In passing along this information, it is important to note that we are very early in the process. Governor-elect John Kasich, Batchelder and Niehaus have not even taken office. However, it is important that they are working on this issue early. We are very aware that many districts must make May ballot decisions by early February and the amount of state funding is a key element in that decision. Therefore, we will continue to monitor the situation and make you aware of key information.
