LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

At the Regular School Board meeting on February 8th the Board took action to place a renewal levy on the May 4, 2010 ballot. This renewal levy will not increase taxes. This levy is a combination of two issues, the first of which was passed in 1990 and was last renewed in 2005. The levy will continue to raise $6,695,000 annually. Please know this renewal levy will not increase taxes and passage is vital to allow our district to maintain current programs and services. This levy is a combination of two issues, the first of which was passed in 1990 and was last renewed in 2005. The levy will continue to raise $6,695,000 annually.

I had the honor of introducing myself last week to the members of the North Royalton High School and Early Childhood Center PTAs at their meetings on February 9th and 10th. It was nice hearing about all the great work they are doing for our students and staff. Most importantly it is great to see how involved our parents are in the district.

On February 11th I attended the Hearts for Haiti Spaghetti Dinner sponsored by the North Royalton High School Student Council. There was a good turnout and most importantly all the proceeds donated went to the American Red Cross Haiti Hurricane Relief Fund. I just wanted to thank all our students, staff, and community members who attended to support this great cause!

THIS WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

No School February 15th for President’s Day.

Coffee with School Board Member Dan Langshaw
If you are a constituent living in the North Royalton School District, you are
invited to attend my next monthly constituent coffee on Feb. 17th at the French Quarter Café located at 5540 Wallings Road from 6pm to 8pm. I hold these coffees in order to stay in touch with fellow residents and listen to their feedback. There is no appointment necessary. Simply stop by and talk to me. You may also contact me via e-mail if you wish at dan.langshaw@northroyaltonsd.org or call me at 440-785-4240.

All Day Kindergarten Update
The district has filed our formal waiver application with the Ohio Department of Education regarding all day kindergarten. The application included our Board resolution and our plans for 2011-12. We have taken several steps in that area, beginning with an assessment of our physical space and a survey of our parents to determine how many would seek all day kindergarten if it were available, verses those who would prefer the current option of every other day or the equivalent of half day. Frankly our plans for 2011-12 are to continue this study of potential options because unfortunately, the situation does not change for physically housing students nor the considerable financial impact of increased staffing and facilities. Please know we believe ADK is a very worthwhile option for our students. It is our hope that the Ohio Department of Education continues to work with school districts to give the time, energy and resources including financial support to explore and financially implement ADK while also considering the value of our present programs and services that could be impacted with the mandate.

NORTH ROYALTON CITY SCHOOLS SCENE
What is SCENE? School Community Exchange Night for Education. Our community has spoken and we continue to listen and act. During the focus groups for the district’s Strategic Plan, it became very evident that our community truly values two-way informal communication. The district has chosen not to wait until after the development of the Strategic Plan to implement such an opportunity. On February 23rd at 7pm at the Albion Elementary Media Center we will hold our first NRCS SCENE. This will offer a chance for questions and answers about your school district. There will be a brief update from Albion principal, Mrs. Vojta and Superintendent Mr. Vittardi and then they will be available for two-way dialogue with our community. The district will follow this pattern in SCENE dialogues at buildings throughout the district in the months to come. (Attached is a flyer for the event).

Happy Valentine's Day!
