Board Update

Good Afternoon:

To all those who are fathers, Happy Fathers Day! Thank you all for what you do each and every day!


LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

The School Board met on June 14th for its’ June Regular School Board Meeting. The Board recognized those who have volunteered their time during the 2009-2010 school year. The Board also approved a resolution to acknowledge the June 26, 210 commemoration event honoring John Shepherd, who is believed to be the longest-lived veteran of the American Revolution. In addition the Board approved the creation of a new Family and Civic Engagement Committee as required by HB 1. The Board officially certified the 2010 graduates of North Royalton High School. Leslie First, Mary Ellen Chirdon, Douglas Hanson, James Mackulin, Paul McHale, and Marty Lydecker were recognized on their recent retirement from the district, special thanks to them for their years of service! The Board also approved the June 2010 policy updates. A resolution authorizing the superintendent and treasurer to execute a ground site lease Clear Wireless, LLC in connection with the cell tower compound at Albion Elementary School was passed. This ground site lease will provide an extra $725 a month for the district’s technology fund. The Board also approved various other meeting agenda items, and such other matters that came before the Board.

On June 15th attended the Cambridge School Board Meeting, to learn first-hand more about their student board representative program. I made the two hour trip down to Cambridge, Ohio in hopes to bring back home to our district a similar program in which two high school students would be selected to serve as liaisons for the student body and would provide regular monthly reports to the school board on issues ranging from student achievement to just simply sharing ideas from a student’s point of view. While down in Cambridge I got to meet their student applicants for the 2010-2011 school year board representative position. Each student shared with the board a response to the query: "Explain what qualities and abilities you exhibit to be considered for this position." Representatives for the past year Chris Colby and Logan Kasinecz spoke about the learning experience and received gifts from the board. I enjoyed meeting with members of the Cambridge School Board and learning about this nationally recognized program. They even included me in a picture with their past and present student board representatives. Attached is the picture, if you like to check it out.

On June 17th, I held my Monthly Constituent Coffee at the French Quarter Café. I just wanted to thank those who stopped by to give me their feedback. I hold these monthly coffees in order to stay in touch with fellow residents and listen to their feedback. There is no appointment necessary. Simply stop by and talk to me. I will keep you posted when my next monthly coffee in July will be.

On June 18th attended the Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative Conference Breakfast. The Cuyahoga County Fatherhood Initiative (CCFI) seeks to strengthen families in our community by encouraging fathers to play a more active role in nurturing and raising their children. The Initiative responds to escalating social concerns regarding "father absence" by providing fathers with access to services designed to prepare them to better meet the emotional, psychological, and financial needs of their children. The CCFI also seeks to increase public awareness of the importance of father involvement. During the breakfast, I had the opportunity to learn more about the CCFI from a panel of government, non-profit, and elected officials from our county. It was a very informative panel discussion.


THIS WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD

This week there is a Facilities Committee Meeting, City Recreation Board Meeting and various other events.

Schools Facilities Committee will be meeting on June 21st at 7pm in the High School Media Center, 14713 Ridge Rd., North Royalton, OH 44133. At this meeting the committee will review the work that has been done, but more importantly to begin the discussion of the four master plans that have been developed to date. The committee would like to have as many people from our community as possible in attendance and serve on the committee. If you also know someone that is interested, please bring them along as well. Community input is extremely important as we move forward as a district.

North Royalton Stadium Foundation
The North Royalton Stadium Foundation's sole purpose is to privately raise, with no taxpayer money, the necessary funds to renovate the High School Stadium with state-of-the-art synthetic turf and an eight lane all-weather track.
