Happy Memorial Day Weekend! As a U.S. Army Veteran, I just want to personally thank all those who served or currently serving in the United States Military. We are all free because of them! LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD
On May 25th, I attended the North Royalton High School Springs Sports Recognition Night. Congratulations to our Baseball, Softball, Athletic Trainers, Tennis, and Track & Field athletes on all their achievements this past season! Go BEARS!!
I attended the Health and Wellness Committee meeting on May 26th .The committee received an update about the upcoming Health Fair which is planned for Nov. 6th. Response from vendors has been good thus far. The committee discussed feedback on the Valley Vista Health Fair. The event was a positive success. A small part of the grant was spent on holding the event, the remaining money will be used to purchase pedometers, Wii fit materials, and other wellness items for elementary school classes in the district.
Also the committee discussed the impact of SB 210/HB 373 would have on the district and recommended that people contact their state representative on this matter. Discussion continued on the new proposed home baked food procedure. The committee also
discussed how the Family and Civic Engagement Committee that is required by HB 1 will impact the wellness committee. Some members of the wellness committee will also be members of the Family and Civic Engagement Committee because of overlapping issues both will be dealing with.

Contact legislators on HB 373/SB 210
Your help is needed to contact our representatives in the Ohio House of Representatives. The legislature is expected to vote on House Bill 373 and/or Senate Bill 210, the Healthy Choices, Healthy Children Act before they leave for summer recess later this month. An area of concern is the requirement of 30 minutes of moderate to rigorous physical activity for grades K-12 that this legislation calls for. This would add one more thing to the schools agenda as well as possibly decrease instructional time in some of the core subjects. Please contact your legislator today and ask them to remove this provision from the bill entirely.

Facilities Committee Meeting tonight
NR Schools Facilities Committee will be meeting tonight Wednesday May 26th at 7pm at the high school media center.
At this meeting, the committee would like to share the district Strategic Plan, but focus on the facilities aspect so that you are aware of the work that has been done this past year. We would also then like to share some information about a “private” group called the North Royalton Stadium Foundation that was formed this past spring to work with the district about private fundraising for securing funds for new synthetic turf and a track for our high school stadium. The committee will also have additional information to share with you about a renovation project that is presently happening with the east side of the bleachers in the stadium.

SB 210 Update
A few weeks ago I gave testimony on SB 210. I hope that HB 373 will better address the concerns that have been raised by school district's throughout Ohio. Here is a quick update.
SB 210 passes Senate
The Ohio Senate passed Senate Bill (SB) 210 by a vote of 24-7. SB 210 requires schools to adopt a requirement that students participate in at least 30 minutes of moderate to rigorous physical activity per day. The bill provides that, due to an undue financial hardship, a school may apply for a waiver of the physical activity requirement. SB 210 provides for a waiver for schools to participate in the body mass index (BMI) screening. SB 210 will become the legislative vehicle for the Healthy Choices, Healthy Children Act.
Physical activity waiver
The physical activity requirement would become part of permanent law if SB 210 passes in its current form. The annual waiver included in the bill does not satisfy our concerns about its future implications for schools. A waiver implies that a school district has put off compliance but will at some point be able to implement the required mandate. The bill contains no funding mechanism for a future time when districts would need to comply.
The House Health Committee did have testimony on House Bill (HB) 373 last week and OSBA, the Ohio Association of School Business Officials, the Ohio Federation of Teachers and the Ohio Education Association provided testimony asking that the physical activity requirement be removed from the bill.

I attended the North Royalton Stadium Foundation’s Press Conference held on May 20th at the North Royalton City Schools Stadium. Since 1940 our outdoor stadium has hosted countless soccer, football, band and track events. As you know, our community has grown significantly over the past 70 years, but our stadium has not kept pace with that change and growth. The group unveiled their plans for the project and has begun its’ fundraising campaign. The Stadium Foundation’s goal is to raise $1.4 million before February 2011 thereby allowing the construction of the turf and track to be completed before the 2011 fall sports season. NORTH ROYALTON Childhood obesity and nutrition concerns are sprouting up across the nation and Ohio Senate Bill 210 may bring these concerns closer to home.
School Board member Dan Langshaw testified last week to the Ohio Senate’s Health, Human Services and Aging Committee about the proposed “Healthy Choices, Healthy Children” legislation that may go into effect as early as next school year.
An amended substitute version of SB 210 was approved last Thursday. The bill calls for many provisions including the establishment of nutritional standards for certain foods and beverages sold in schools and changes in physical education.
Langshaw testified against another requirement calling for 30 minutes of moderate to rigorous physical activity each day for students in kindergarten through 12th grade.
According to information released by the Ohio School Board Association, the bill was tweaked to include a provision allowing districts to annually apply to the Ohio Department of Education for a waiver from the 30-minute physical activity requirement.
A hotly debated requirement of periodic measuring of students’ body mass index was removed from SB 210. The measurement would have been part of each district’s state report card.
Langshaw said the school board actively supports the message of SB 210, but the logistics are complex
“We like the changes and it’s all going in the right direction, but it’s just a matter of can we practically do this,” Langshaw said
Langshaw did not have an estimate, but said it would cost the school district “a lot of money” to comply with the proposed legislation
As part of his testimony, Langshaw outlined to the committee what efforts are already being made within the district to ward off childhood obesity and promote health and wellness
The district recently received a $2,000 mini-grant from the Ohio Department of Education to hold an evening parent health and wellness academy. Representatives are also in the process of partnering with the city to host a health expo in conjunction with the 5K Bear Run Nov. 6. More than 100 vendors will be invited to participate.
As a member of the district’s Health and Wellness Committee, Langshaw said many issues are already being addressed at the local level.
“There is so much good we can do, but at the same time, we’re not the solution for everything,” Langshaw said. “Many things (in SB 210) are vague, unclear and very broad, and that concerns us. As a district, we are very fiscally responsible, and we do agree on this issue, but it is a matter of how to go about doing this.”
Education is also key in addressing health concerns, Langshaw said.
“If you really want to solve obesity there has to be more of an educational element to it,” he said. “Are you really educating them about obesity or are you just making them exercise for 30 minutes each day?”
Langshaw suggested the state should instead follow the lead of national initiatives like First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign. Existing health and wellness grants should also be increased and expanded.
SB 210 continues to be tweaked and more hearings are expected.

LAST WEEK IN YOUR SCHOOL BOARD
The School Board met on May 10th for its’ May Regular School Board Meeting. Bob Serpentini and Aldo Filippelli were honored as the 2009-2010 Friends of Education. The board approved the North Royalton School District’s Five-Year Strategic Plan. The district will focus on six goals in the areas of community engagement, student
achievement, communication, facilities, financial, and collaboration as outlined by the strategic plan. The board also approved a resolution of support for the capital campaign by the Greater Cleveland YMCA to establish the North Royalton YMCA. In addition the board approved David Vitale to be new Band Director at North Royalton High School. The Board has taken action to begin the bid process for the east stands (visitor’s) and all other site work. The Board has accepted an agreement with Crown Castle for the upfront easement money to help fund the west stands (home).
On May 11th I gave testimony on Senate Bill 210 Healthy Choices, Healthy Children legislation before the Ohio Senate’s Health, Human Services and Aging Committee,
down at the Statehouse in Columbus. I was also joined by representatives from other school districts in the state offering testimony on this pending legislation. As a member of the school district’s Health and Wellness Committee, I have been following this legislation for some time now, because of the potential impact it would have on districts like ours. SB 210 calls for the establishment of nutritional standards for certain foods and beverages sold in public and chartered nonpublic schools; requires public school students to have periodic body mass index measurements; requires daily physical activity for public school students and makes other changes regarding physical education; establishes the Healthy Choices for Healthy Children Council. It was great to have the opportunity to testify before the Ohio Senate on this legislation and ensuring that the North Royalton School District’s voice is heard here in Columbus. I hope that the suggestions I proposed before the committee are included in the final draft of SB 210. Substitute versions of the bill are slated to be presented next week, with a possible vote on SB 210 scheduled for Wednesday.
I attended the North Royalton High School Senior Honors and Awards Night on May 11th to present my local scholarship. Since 2005 I have self-sponsored the, "Dan
Langshaw Leadership Scholarship", a local $300 college scholarship awarded each year to graduating seniors at North Royalton High School that recognizes the achievements of student leaders in the district. I am proud to announce the recipient of the 6th Annual “Dan Langshaw Leadership Scholarship” award is Lindsay Leone. Lindsay plans to attend the University of Akron and major in Chemical Engineering. Again, congrats to Lindsay and all the seniors who received a local scholarship and were recognized for various awards that night. Also special thanks to all those in the community who were generous to donate over $56,000 in scholarships to the district’s graduating high school seniors!
On May 13th I attended the Fourth Annual Retirement Reception for all the teachers and support staff retiring at the end of the school year. I just again want to thank the following for all their years of service in the North Royalton School District: Mary Ellen Chirdon, Grade 4 teacher, Royal View; Leslie First, Family Consumer Science teacher, High School; Rich Golenski, Testing Coordinator, Pupil Services; Doug Hanson, Science teacher, High School; Renee Hoffer, Grade 7 teacher, Middle School; Marty Lydecker, Music Teacher, High School; Jim Mackulin, Custodian, High School; and Chris Studor, Community Information Coordinator for the District. Best of luck on retirement to all of them!
I attended the evening Parent Health and Wellness Academy held at Valley Vista on May 13th. This evening was part of the $2,000 mini-grant the district received a few months ago from the Ohio Department of Education. It was a very fun and informative evening. Those who attended gained valuable knowledge regarding health, fitness, and nutrition. If you ever have a chance there is a great website at www.mypyramid.gov on ways to pack healthy lunches and eat healthy as a family.
On May 14th I was invited to join the ECC Green Team with their planting project as part of their green efforts. It was a fun afternoon working with the little kids, parents, and staff at the ECC.

On May 14th I was invited to join the ECC Green Team with their planting project as part of their green efforts. It was a fun afternoon working with the little kids, parents, and staff at the ECC.

If you are a constituent living in the North Royalton School District, you are invited to attend my next monthly constituent coffee on May 19th at the French Quarter Café located at 5540 Wallings Road from 6pm to 8pm. I hold these coffees in order to stay in touch with fellow residents and listen to their feedback one on one. There is no appointment necessary. Simply stop by and talk to me. Those who attend this month will receive a free small coffee.
